White House Delivers Funding Blow to Democratic States: $26 Billion Suspended

The administration of US President Donald Trump has turned the government shutdown into a political bargaining chip, freezing $26 billion in funding to Democratic states. The decision most severely impacted transportation projects in New York ($18 billion) and green energy investments in 16 states, including California and Illinois ($8 billion).

Vice President JD Vance warned that federal employees could face permanent layoffs if the shutdown lasts longer than a few days.

Already 750,000 federal employees have been furloughed, while those in critical roles such as soldiers and border patrol continue to work without pay.

Democratic leaders reacted strongly. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump was using Americans as pawns for political blackmail. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that halting New York projects would lead to thousands of job losses.

Republicans, on the other hand, argue that the Democrats must approve the reopening of the government for the funds to be released.

However, the budget crisis has cast uncertainty over the future of the $1.7 trillion federal spending package. This shutdown was the 15th government shutdown in US history since 1981. The previous longest shutdown lasted 35 days in 2018-2019, also during the Trump administration. This was the 15th government shutdown in US history since 1981.
