Norsk Hydro Flags QatarEnergy Halt to Aluminium Output at Qatalum

Norway’s Norsk Hydro said QatarEnergy has announced a halt to production of several downstream products in Qatar, including aluminium.

QatarEnergy stated it would stop output of urea, polymers, methanol and aluminium, according to Hydro’s statement on Tuesday.

The decision affects Qatalum, a 50/50 joint venture between Norsk Hydro and Qatar Aluminum Manufacturing Company.

Qatalum operates with primary aluminium capacity of 648,000 tonnes and casthouse capacity of 687,000 tonnes annually.

QatarEnergy supplies natural gas to the facility, making energy availability central to continued aluminium production.

Hydro said the specific impact on Qatalum’s operations remains unclear as it seeks further clarification.

The development adds to mounting uncertainty in global commodity markets amid broader regional tensions.
