CARIZON, a joint venture between Volkswagen’s software subsidiary Cariad and China’s Horizon Robotics, announced on Thursday that it has implemented the automaker’s first self-developed automated driving system.
As automakers race to offer the latest driver-assistance technologies in China’s dynamic and software-driven market, Volkswagen plans to showcase its new system at the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show. Industry giants like Mercedes and Huawei will also be showcasing their latest innovations in autonomous driving at the event. This presentation comes after new regulations implemented this week by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which include stricter restrictions on the introduction and application of driver-assistance technologies. Therefore, many participants are shifting their message from a high-tech focus to one of safety and responsible use. Volkswagen stated that their system offers “Level 2+” automation support. This allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel in certain scenarios, but the road will still need to be actively monitored. The technology is planned to be introduced in a Volkswagen model later this year. A more advanced version is expected to be included in entry-level vehicles by 2026.
