OpenAI’s Stargate Move: Huge Investment, Big Risk

OpenAI is expanding its half-trillion-dollar “Stargate” data center project to keep up with the demand for artificial intelligence. Initially designed as just an infrastructure company, the project now has a much broader scope, including chip manufacturing and massive data centers.

CEO Sam Altman announced that they aim to build 1 gigawatt of new AI infrastructure every week. Partnerships with SoftBank, Oracle, and most recently Nvidia have been established in this process.

In particular, the new collaboration with Nvidia, which could reach up to $100 billion, has greatly accelerated the project.

Despite the chip shortage, the company plans to diversify its financing and establish new centers through borrowing. The massive 1,100-acre campus in Abilene, Texas, stands out as Stargate’s flagship project.

However, this aggressive strategy is raising concerns among investors about an “AI bubble.” Nevertheless, Altman remains optimistic: “There may be ups and downs in the short term, but in the long term, the graph will always go up.” OpenAI’s expanding vision aims to meet the huge demand for ChatGPT and new AI tools. However, the project faces a tough test due to high costs, supply chain bottlenecks, and exclusive agreements with Microsoft.
