OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has signed a seven-year cloud computing deal worth $38 billion with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This move allows the company to diversify its computing power by reducing its reliance on Microsoft.
Under the agreement, OpenAI will gain access to Nvidia graphics processors and train its AI models on this infrastructure.
CEO Sam Altman said, “Scaling advanced AI requires massive and reliable computing power. Our collaboration with AWS will empower this new era.” This agreement follows OpenAI’s massive deals with Oracle, Broadcom, AMD, and Nvidia in 2025. The company has signed contracts totaling over $1 trillion this year. The exclusive cloud partnership with Microsoft ended earlier this year. With the new structure, OpenAI gained greater operational and financial freedom.Amazon’s shares surged to a record high of $140 billion following the announcement of the deal. AWS CEO Matt Garman said, “We are uniquely positioned to support OpenAI’s massive AI payloads.”
According to experts, OpenAI’s move is part of its strategy to maintain leadership in the AI competition. However, the company is unprofitable due to high capital expenditures; It announced a loss of $12 billion in the last quarter alone.
Although the size of the investments has been described by some analysts as an “AI bubble,” Altman responded to these criticisms by saying, “This growth rate is also unprecedented.”
