The AI giant is currently testing an internal prototype that offers a social feed built around ChatGPT’s visual generation capabilities.
Regarding this project, which is still in the conceptual stage, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is reportedly secretly gathering feedback from external sources.
It is not yet clear whether the new platform will be a standalone application or a feature integrated into the existing ChatGPT interface.According to Reuters, the company declined to comment on the matter.
OpenAI’s potential entry into the social media space could further increase tensions between Altman and Elon Musk, the owner of X and one of the founders of OpenAI. The relationship between Musk, who left OpenAI in 2018, and Altman has become increasingly strained in recent months. In February, a group of investors led by Musk made an unsolicited offer of $97.4 billion to OpenAI, but the offer was quickly rejected. Musk sued OpenAI and Altman last year, accusing them of abandoning their mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity. OpenAI responded by suing Musk, accusing him of conducting a “harassment campaign.” The legal process between the two parties will go to court next spring. If it comes to fruition, OpenAI’s new social media platform could directly compete with Meta, which is also reportedly working on an independent AI service. Altman had previously hinted at the project in a post on X regarding these news, saying, “Okay, maybe we’ll make a social app too.” Meta and X feed their AI models with massive datasets derived from user-generated content. It is thought that OpenAI aims to seize this data advantage with this project. Meta and X feed their AI models with massive datasets derived from user-generated content.
