OpenAI is considering a contract to deploy its AI technology on NATO’s unclassified networks, according to a source familiar with the discussions.
The potential agreement comes days after the ChatGPT developer reached a separate deal with the Pentagon to deploy its technology in U.S. defense systems.
Reports initially suggested the company might support NATO’s classified networks, but OpenAI later clarified the opportunity concerns unclassified alliance infrastructure only.
NATO, a 32-member military alliance, did not immediately comment on the potential collaboration outside regular business hours.
OpenAI is backed by major technology investors including Microsoft and Amazon, highlighting strong industry support for expanding AI infrastructure.
The Pentagon agreement followed a decision by the U.S. government to end cooperation with rival AI firm Anthropic after disputes over defense applications.
Anthropic leadership had opposed using AI for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons, citing ethical and governance concerns.
OpenAI stated its systems will not be used for surveillance of U.S. citizens, and the Pentagon confirmed AI would not power autonomous weapons or intelligence monitoring.
