Meta Begins Using AI-Powered Concrete in Data Centers

Meta is revolutionizing construction processes in its Minnesota data center project by using a custom concrete mix designed with artificial intelligence. The new formula is both more sustainable and faster to implement. Meta developed this project in collaboration with cement giant Amrize and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Artificial intelligence was used this time to design a concrete mix, instead of chatbots. Developed with open-source BoTorch and Ax tools, the system suggests formulas that optimize cement, aggregates, water, and additives.

The classic testing process, which takes weeks, can now be completed in just a few trials.

In tests conducted at Meta’s data center in Rosemount, the new mixture successfully met technical standards. Achieved with only two iterations and minimal human intervention, the mixture surpassed traditional formulas in terms of durability, ease of application, and low emission potential.

This system is non-commercial, and Meta has shared the code and data it developed on the open-source platform SustainableConcrete on GitHub. The goal is to promote greener and more efficient concrete solutions not only in their own projects but throughout the entire construction industry.
