A German court has ruled that the Apple Watch cannot be marketed as a “CO2-neutral product.” The Frankfurt Regional Court found Apple’s claim misleading to consumers and ruled that it violated competition law.
Apple based its claim on its eucalyptus planting project in Paraguay.
However, the court emphasized that 75% of the land is not guaranteed for the period after 2029 and that the future of the project is not “guaranteed.” The environmental group Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), which filed the lawsuit, described the decision as a major victory. DUH President Juergen Resch said, “CO2 storage is limited in commercial eucalyptus plantations, ecological integrity is not guaranteed.” Apple declined to comment on the decision, which can be appealed.
