Apple is accelerating iPhone production in India to offset tariff risks.

Apple is accelerating its efforts to manufacture most of the iPhones sold in the U.S. in India by the end of 2026. The company aims to reduce its reliance on China due to concerns about rising tariffs, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The company is in urgent talks with key partners Foxconn and Tata to accelerate the manufacturing shift, the source said on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the plans. Neither Apple nor its manufacturing partners have commented on the matter.

Currently, about 80% of the 60 million iPhones sold in the U.S. each year are manufactured in China. However, Apple is working to shift a significant portion of this production to India. In March alone, Apple shipped approximately 600 tons of iPhones from India to the US, worth $2 billion — a record month for its Indian partners, particularly Foxconn and Tata. This move comes after the US began imposing 26% tariffs on Indian goods. This rate is quite low compared to China’s tariffs. Apple’s turn to India underscores the country’s growing role in the tech giant’s global supply chain.
