Germany prefers a tariff agreement with the US, but supports the EU’s retaliation plan if necessary.

Germany remains committed to reaching an agreement with the US aimed at reducing import tariffs, while also stating its readiness to support the European Union’s contingency plan should negotiations fail. This statement was made by the country’s finance minister on Thursday.

In an interview with Deutschlandfunk radio, Finance Minister Joerg Kukies said, “Our position is very clear: our Plan A is to reach an agreement to reduce tariffs, not increase them.”

However, Kukies also stressed that they support the EU’s alternative strategy, which includes implementing retaliatory measures when necessary.

Kukies made these statements in Washington, where he was attending the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
