Meta Faces Pressure to Strengthen Oversight of AI Deepfakes

Meta’s Oversight Board has urged the company to strengthen policies addressing the growing spread of AI-generated fake videos across its social media platforms.

Board members warned that the surge of synthetic videos is blurring the line between truth and fabrication online.

They argued the trend could undermine public trust in information, making it increasingly difficult for users to distinguish real footage from manipulated content.

Meta said it will apply a label to the disputed video within seven days, following the board’s recommendation.

The Oversight Board, created in 2020, reviews moderation decisions across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, often challenging Meta’s handling of controversial posts.

Currently, Meta largely depends on users to disclose AI-generated material or submit complaints, a process critics say is too slow for rapidly spreading misinformation.

The board concluded Meta’s system is “not robust enough” to manage the scale and speed of AI content, especially during crises when engagement surges.
