Ford Motor is recalling 1.74 million vehicles in the United States after a defect affecting rearview cameras raised safety concerns, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The regulator said the issue may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying, reducing the driver’s visibility behind the vehicle and increasing the risk of accidents.
The recall affects certain Ford Bronco and Ford Edge models, where the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) may overheat and shut down unexpectedly.
When this occurs, the camera feed may fail to appear on the display, preventing drivers from seeing the area behind the vehicle while reversing.
Separately, the NHTSA said additional models are being recalled due to a display malfunction affecting rearview camera images.
Vehicles including the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair may show a flipped or inverted image on the center screen.
Such distortion can result in an incorrectly displayed rearview image when the vehicle is placed in reverse, potentially confusing drivers.
Ford is expected to address the issue through software updates or technical repairs as part of the safety recall process.
