Rick Davies, founder, vocalist and keyboardist of the legendary rock band Supertramp, has died at the age of 81. The artist passed away on Saturday due to multiple myeloma, which was diagnosed nearly a decade ago.
Davies, along with his bandmate Roger Hodgson, wrote and performed some of Supertramp’s most iconic songs, leaving a lasting mark on rock music.
His soulful vocals and unforgettable Wurlitzer touch became the heart of the band’s sound.Songs bearing Davies’ signature include Bloody Well Right, which entered the US charts in 1974, and the 1979 hit Goodbye Stranger. The band achieved global sales of over 30 million copies and earned a Grammy nomination with their legendary 1979 album Breakfast in America.
After Hodgson’s departure in 1983, Davies continued to keep Supertramp alive on stage and in the studio. The reunion tour planned for 2015 was canceled due to the artist’s cancer diagnosis.
The band’s statement read, “Rick was not only a musician, but also known for his warmth, resilience, and devotion to his wife, Sue. His music and legacy are proof that great songs never die.”
